‘Irish audiences have always had a huge affection for musicals, they attract a broad age demographic and appeal to theatre fans as well as avid cinema-goers. They are the ultimate cinematic rollercoaster ride, eliciting a wide range of strong and contrasting emotions - you can laugh, cry and of course, sing along, all within seconds!’ according to Eoin Wrixon, CEO of Wide Eye Media.

2018 has been already an amazing year for quality musical content, but MARY POPPINS RETURNS, which could be the biggest film of the year, is still to come and there is even more planned for 2019.

Disney’s live-action remake of ALADDIN (May) will feature the original songs as well as new ones written by the team behind THE GREATEST SHOWMAN.

From the director of BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY comes ROCKETMAN (May). This will use Elton John’s music to evoke important moments in his life and chronicle his transformation from shy songwriter to superstar.

Little is known about the UNTITLED DANNY BOYLE / RICHARD CURTIS COMEDY (June) apart from it being a Beatle-mania era musical comedy starring Ed Sheerin, from the director of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and the writer of LOVE ACTUALLY, which is enough to guarantee it will be a hit.

THE LION KING (July) is a re-imagining of the 1994 Disney classic which is the top-earning title in box-office history for both stage productions & films.

LAST CHRISTMAS (November) will feature the music of George Michael including some new, previously unreleased material. This festive romantic comedy is directed by Paul Feig who brought us BRIDESMAIDS, which was ROI's No. 1 film of 2011. The screenplay is co-written by Emma Thompson who also co-wrote BRIDGET JONES'S BABY which was the highest grossing film of 2016 in ROI.

One of the most iconic musicals ever gets its first big-screen adaptation as CATS (December) starring Ian McKellan, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden and Idris Elba ends the year on a festive feline note.
