Sit back and relax as we take you through even more of the sensational stories headed to a big screen near you in 2020…

Back From the ‘80s
2020 will see the return of cult ‘80s movies, all featuring original cast members. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer will reprise their roles as Maverick and Iceman in TOP GUN: MAVERICK, which lands in July. Jason Reitman whose father Ivan Reitman directed the original ‘80s GHOSTBUSTER films is behind GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE. Also arriving in July, this brings Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver back together to fight supernatural forces.

BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC reunites Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter as time travelling musicians and saviours of the universe in August. In December, COMING 2 AMERICA brings back Eddie Murphy as Akeem who travels to America to meet his long-lost son and heir to the throne of Zamunda.

Enduring Classics
Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton are among the stars of the hilarious adaptation of Dickens’
THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD. From writer/director Armando Iannucci of Alan Partridge fame, this releases in January. February delivers a fresh take on Austen’s EMMA starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Nighy and Amanda Hart. This is the directorial debut of acclaimed fashion photographer Autumn de Wilde and looks exquisite.

The vibrant new version of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s THE SECRET GARDEN starring Dixie Egerick, Colin Firth and Julie Walters blossoms on screens in April. Kenneth Branagh returns as Hercule Poirot in DEATH ON THE NILE in October and is joined by Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Russell Brand, Armie Hammer and Gal Gadot.

Must-See Musicals
In March, MILITARY WIVES starring Sharon Horgan and Kirstin Scott Thomas is about a band of misfit women who form a choir on a military base. This will feature new material from Robbie Williams who has written an original song for the film. IN THE HEIGHTS is based on the award-winning Broadway musical written by Lin Manuel Miranda and directed by Jon M. Chu (CRAZY RICH ASIANS). Set in Washington Heights, New York and concerning immigrants from The Dominican Republic and already a smash-hit stage show, this is expected to hit a high note with Irish audiences when it arrives in August.

Also coming our way in August is RESPECT. This tells the life story of iconic singer Aretha Franklin, played by Jennifer Hudson, with Marc Maron of Glow as legendary producer Jerry Wexler. In October, EVERYBODY'S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE is based on a BBC documentary about a teenager who dreams of becoming a drag queen, which then inspired a hit stage show. The cast includes Richard E. Grant and Sharon Horgan (again!). Then comes Stephen Spielberg’s WEST SIDE STORY about teenagers affiliated with rival street gangs falling in love in 1950s New York City. Arriving in December, just in time to be the first Christmas Number One of the new decade.

That’s not all, there’s plenty more remarkable films to read about in part one of our 2020 preivew, as well as part two and part four.

In a constantly shifting, unpredictable world, it's comforting to know that some things remain the same. One experience that never changes is the nostalgic feeling of anticipation when the lights go down, the popcorn stops rustling, and the whole room holds its breath as the film begins.
