Disney’s live-action remake of THE LION KING has just charged past AVENGERS: ENDGAME to become highest-grossing film of 2019 in the Republic of Ireland. The remake has been a roaring success here in ROI, amassing an estimated one million trips through the turnstile since it released here on the 19th July.
THE LION KING is not only the No.1 highest-earning film of 2019 after taking €6,440,635 in ROI alone and knocking AVENGERS: ENDGAME off the top spot, it has also made it to
No. 4 on the ROI Top Films of All Time chart.
After just seven days on Irish screens, THE LION KING had already made it to No. 6 in the ROI Top Ten, taking over €2.5 million in its first week here in the Republic. It crossed the billion-dollar mark at the global box office after less than three weeks and within one month it had entered the ROI Top Ten of All Time at No. 10.

ROI cinema attendances saw a surge in July 2019. Admissions soared by 8% from 1.52 million in July 2018 to 1.64 million in July 2019 which was also the month in which the highest admissions have been recorded so far this year. This spike has been attributed to THE LION KING, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME which climbed to No.4 in the ROI Top Ten and TOY STORY 4 which is the No. 3 film at the ROI Box Office and No. 10 on the ROI chart of Top Films of All Time. With award-nominated movies coming to screens from this month and other major highlights yet to launch, admissions will boost further and continue the trend seen in July. Some of the biggest blockbusters of 2019 have yet to come, including JOKER, TERMINATOR: DARK FATE, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, FROZEN II, STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER and LITTLE WOMEN.
